MUSCULAR STRENGTH AND ENDURANCE
Although muscular strength and endurance are closely related, it is important to differentiate between the two. Muscular strength is the amount of force or weight a muscle or group of muscles can exert for one repetition. It is generally measured by a single maximal contraction. The amount of weight you can bench press overhead one time, for example, measures the strength of the triceps muscle. You can measure the strength of other muscle groups the same way with specific tests. Muscular endurance is the capacity of a muscle group to complete an uninterrupted series of repetitions as often as possible with light weights. The total number of bench presses you can complete with half of your maximum weight on the barbell, for example, measures the endurance of the triceps and pectoralis muscles. Depending on the desired outcome, you can manipulate the training variables (choice of equipment and exercises, amount of resistance or weight, number of repetitions and sets, length of rest interval) to make your program strength- or endurance-oriented or a balance of both.
This chapter addresses the key factors involved in training for the development of strength and endurance, including importance, influencing factors, training principles and suggestions, specific exercises, equipment, girth control, and other related concerns to help design a program that meets your specific needs.
