FACTORS AFFECTING MUSCULAR STRENGTH AND ENDURANCE: TYPES OF TRAINING

The three most commonly used strength and endurance training methods are isotonics, isokinetics, and isometrics, each with a number of variations and each requiring special equipment. During an isotonic contraction, such as the execution of an arm curl with free weights or universal or nautilus machines, the muscle shortens (positive phase) as the weight is brought toward the body and lengthens (negative phase) as it is returned to the starting position. Inertia helps move the weight during the positive phase, and the weight is slowly lowered under control during the negative phase. During an isokinetic arm curl with special equipment, the muscle also shortens and lengthens during the positive and negative phases; however, maximal resistance is provided throughout the full range of movement in both phases. Without the benefit of inertia or gravity to allow a weight to drop, the routine would be considerably more difficult. In an isometric contraction, the exercised muscle contracts but its overall length remains unchanged.
You are performing isotonic contractions when you use Free Weights, Universal, Nautilus, Cam II, Polaris, and other similar equipment. New Life Cycle equipment has found a way to eliminate cheating and take full advantage of the negative phase of contraction. During the negative phase of each repetition, the weight automatically increases by 25 percent. It is also nearly impossible to drop the weight and cheat as you return to the starting position in the negative phase or to use inertia to help during the positive phase.
The Mini-Gym uses the isokinetic, or accommodating resistance, principle designed to overload the muscle group maximally through the entire range of motion. The harder you pull, the harder the Mini-Gym resists your pull. Since there is no negative phase, strength gains are not as rapid as they are with other equipment.
Hydra Fitness and Eagle Performance Systems combine the isotonic and isokinetic methods by automatically adjusting to the strength and speed of the individual.
Isometric exercises can be compared to weight-training movements in which the weight is so heavy that it cannot be moved. It involves a steady muscle contraction against immovable resistance for six to eight seconds. Strength gains appear to be specific to the angle and do not transfer into increased strength throughout the full range of motion.
Calisthenics is the oldest form of weight training. Using the body as resistance, it represents a safe, practical, and effective method of developing muscular strength and endurance. Since the resistance is low (body weight only) and since a high number of repetitions must be used to bring about fatigue, the program is more effective for developing muscular endurance than it is for developing strength. Calisthenics is also an ideal, safe strength and endurance training method for preadolescent children.
Professional athletes and experts prefer isotonic movements with free weights for the development of muscular strength and endurance, muscle mass, power, and speed. Special equipment that allows either isotonic or isokinetic movement is excellent for rehabilitation from injury, focusing on specific body areas, and improving general body development. This equipment is relatively safe and can be used without a spotter, or partner.
